Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) recently gave recognition to neighbourhoods under its Petaling Jaya Sustainable Community Award 2010/2011.
The annual awards recognised the neighbourhoods for their efforts in making their residential areas a sustainable, secured and environmental-friendly neighbourhood to live in.
In the new format this time, MBPJ awarded the top three neighbourhoods besides five separate awards in various categories.
The five subsidiarycategories are social integration, safe neighbourhood, green neighbourhood, good governance and entrepreneurship.
The participating residential areas were scrutinised for a year by a panel of judges consisting of environmentalists, MBPJ personnel and experts led by Datin Paduka Dr Halimaton Saadiah Hashim.
Damansara Jaya Residents and Owners Association emerged as the main winner of the award for the year for their continuous efforts as well as going above and beyond the criteria.
It is the third win for the neighbourhood and they were presented RM50,000 worth of development grant, a trophy and certificate.
In second place was SS2B Residents Association which took home RM25,000 development grant, a trophy and certificate.
Taman Mayang Jaya Residents Association won third prize and earned RM10,000, a trophy and certificate.
Winners in the five subsidiary categories received RM3,000 development grant, a trophy and certificate each.
Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said the award was one of MBPJ’s initiatives involving residents.
“By taking part in programmes like this, it shows that there is a proactive mindset among the citizens for their community.
“This is one good way for the local authority and the residents to work hand-in-hand for the benefit of our city,” he said.
At the award dinner, Roslan also said that MBPJ allocated RM281mil this year for the city with more programmes and actions that will take place for the betterment of the city, in line with the Local Agenda 21 implementation.
Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said Petaling Jaya was set to become one of the developed cities in the world, such as Brisbane and Barcelona, that were sustainable cities.
“These cities have taken major actions through their local agenda and have put their names on the world map, and Petaling Jaya is aspiring to become one.
“Thus, we need the citizens to support the local government initiatives and become a medium to the city’s development,” he said in his speech.
Both Khalid and Roslan later handed the prizes to the winning neighbourhoods’ representatives before dinner was served.
