IPOH: Bachelor Chai Wah Leong has every reason to cheer the arrival of the Year of the Dragon.
Chai, 57, who lives alone in a dilapidated house without electricity or water supply in Ampang Baru here, received a special visit by Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir yesterday.
Dr Zambry gave a hamper and ang pow to Chai. But that was not all.
The mentri besar also ordered the Perak Yayasan Bina Upaya (YBU) and Ipoh City Council (MBI) to demolish Chai’s old house within a week and replace it with a new one.
Chai was grateful for the state government’s attention.
“I am looking forward to the new house, which will have electricity and water,” he said, adding that he gets his water supply from a well.
Dr Zambry also visited another Ampang Baru resident Lee Siew Yong and her daughter Yam Yok Lam who lived nearby.
He and his wife Datin Seri Saripah Zulkifli presented hampers and ang pows to Lee, 82, and Yam, 57.
Dr Zambry said the Perak government would do whatever it could to help poor citizens in the state.
“It is the state’s policy to help the poor regardless of their race.
“The Perak government has an obligation to tackle poverty problems,” he added.
On another matter, Dr Zambry has directed MBI officials to hold a meeting with the state Drainage and Irrigation Department to seek a solution to the problem of overflowing water from Sungai Pinji during downpour.
