KUANTAN: Alam Flora Sdn Bhd has launched an intensive flood mitigation campaign to clean out the drainage system in town.
Its chief executive officer Mohd Zain Hassan said to that end, two pump vehicles had been deployed from the headquarters to clear out debris, rubbish and mud clogging the drainage pipes.
The effort will be continuous and concentrated in areas prone to flash floods. So far, we have cleaned the drains at Jalan Darat Makbar, LorongSetali, Jalan Pasar, Jalan Teluk Sisek, Bukit Sekilau and Jalan Mahkota,he said at the launch of the campaign here recently.
Mohd Zain said two teams would also be on patrol around town if there is heavy rain occurring.
During emergencies, more units will also be deployed from their normal duties to help out, he said.
Mohd Zain added that flash flood mostly happened due to uncontrolled waste disposal.
The drains are usually clogged from coagulated oil underneath restaurants.
Sometimes we can even find construction materials that have been tossed into the drain, he said.
Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong who launched the campaign, said long and short-term measures must be in place to ensure flooding in the town is reduced.
“It is not only Alam Flora and the Kuantan Municipal Councils job to maintain the environment but the public must also be made aware of theconsequences of throwing garbage down the drain”, he said.
Chang said the public could contact the Solid Waste and Public Sanitary Management Corporation at its hotline at 1800-88-7472 for garbage, drainage and overgrown grass complaints.
