Body to raise RM1.48mil to save surau from demolition

ALOR SETAR: The Save Madrasah Salihiah Action Body will launch a fund-raising drive to prevent the demolition of the surau for a shopping mall.
Its chairman Mansor Ahmad said they hoped to raise RM1.48mil for the cost of the surau’s wakaf land.
“We will launch the fund soon,” he said yesterday.
Mansor said the money would be handed to Majlis Agama Islam Kedah (MAIK) in exchange for the land as the committee was adamant about preserving the surau at its Jalan Tambang Badak location here.
It was reported that the state government would replace the Madrasah Salihiah surau with a bigger one at the RM500mil Aman Central Mall, due for completion in 2014.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the land where the surau was sited was acquired for the project, and that the new surau would be located on the ground floor of the mall.
Mansor, who is also Madrasah Salihiah Committee chairman, said MAIK had sent a letter to the committee calling for a discussion.
He hoped that MAIK, the Kedah Islamic Religious Department, state Fatwa Council or state Mufti could offer an explanation as wakaf land was involved.
Mansor said the committee would lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission soon as they felt unclear over how the land was acquired by the state and sold to the developer.
