6,000 new parking bays at LRT, Komuter stations by end-2012

KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 6,000 new parking bays will be built at 18 LRT and Komuter stations by the end of 2012, to allow more people to take advantage of "Park n' Ride" facilities.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said construction of the new parking spots had begun at nearly all of the five LRT and 13 KTM Komuter stations selected for the project, which is expected to benefit some 10,000 commuters.
He said it was difficult to come up with a ballpark figure on the total value of tenders issued under the project, as costs were based on the needs of each station.
"The tenders were awarded to different contractors at each station. I don't have the full figures with me, but the cost should (average) between RM4mil and RM8mil,” he said after completing a site visit to the Serdang Komuter station and the Bandar Tasik Selatan and Sungai Besi LRT stations Tuesday.
The largest development is at the Gombak LRT station on the Kelana Jaya line, which - at a cost of some RM30mil - will accommodate 1,060 more cars after its completion, scheduled for the end of this year.
Other LRT stations that will have additional parking are Bandar Tasik Selatan (1,024 bays), Sungai Besi (214), Ampang (990) and Pudu (500), all on the Ampang line.
A total of 2,163 new parking bays will be spread among 13 Komuter stations, seven of which will be along the Seremban-Rawang route including Serdang (300 bays), Seremban (600), Kajang (300), Bangi (200), Kepong (50), Batang Benar (70) and Salak Selatan (60).
On the Sentul-Pelabuhan Klang route, new parking bays will be built at Padang Jawa station (75), Klang (80), Batu Tiga (18), Pelabuhan Klang (60), Petaling (70) and Shah Alam (280).
Apart from new parking bays, the project - an initiative under the National Key Results Area for urban public transport (NKRA-UPT) - will also include disabled-friendly facilities, security features such as CCTVs and covered walkways at selected stations.
